iPhone Teleprompter

Use your iPhone as an Autocue Teleprompter!

By using the regular Autocue 7” mounting hardware, hood and glass, you can quickly and easily attach your iPhone in place of the traditional monitor to create an iPhone teleprompter. Scripts can be prepared or loaded within any of the apps available from the app store, then start scrolling – either with the start/ stop buttons in the app, or via a wired or wireless hand controller.

Autocue, the world’s leading teleprompter manufacturer, has offered iPhone teleprompting solutions since the launch of the iPhone, and today offers two solutions to cater for all camera and lens types, and budgets.

Choosing an iPhone Teleprompter

How do I choose an iPhone Teleprompter?

There are a number of key questions you need to think about when purchasing an iPhone Teleprompter, regardless of your preferred manufacturer, budget, existing equipment or prompting requirements. At Autocue, we have been leading the design of iPhone Teleprompters and advising our customers since the 1950’s – so if you are still unsure about what you want or need after reading this, please call one of sales team who will be happy to advise you, and explain very clearly why Autocue can offer you the best available solution and price, regardless of your requirements and budget.

What reading range do you require?

The first thing you should consider is the distance of your presenter from the iPhone Teleprompter to help determine what size iPhone Teleprompter you will need e.g. 17” monitor = up to 6m, 10” = up to 4m etc etc. At Autocue, we provide you with the widest range of monitor sizes on the market, so that you can find an iPhone Teleprompter that is just right for your requirements. However, please note that whatever size and manufacturer you select, you need to check that the unit will be compatible with your camera, lens and tripod.

Will your desired size of iPhone Teleprompter work with your camera, lens and tripod combination?

The main question around compatibility of equipment is one of weight – does your tripod head have sufficient payload capacity for the weight of your camera and lens, and the selected iPhone Teleprompter? There are many first time buyers who work with small cameras and tripod heads and don’t have anything appropriate for the weight of an iPhone Teleprompter. For this reason, we added our own range of cost-effective tripods, that are specified to give you sufficient payload capacity for each of our units.

The second question is around whether you can position your camera and lens in the back of the iPhone Teleprompter glass/ hood so that the eye line of the presenter is looking directly in to the camera. This will depend on the specific camera and lens you are using, and also the flexibility of the mounting system in your chosen iPhone Teleprompter. Generally speaking, your camera, lens, tripod and iPhone Teleprompter should all be of a similar proportion to work well together.

As experts in teleprompting, we design our iPhone Teleprompters to cater for the widest possible range of camera/lens combinations. Our Starter iPhone Teleprompters, have camera mounting plates that can move your camera/lens towards and away from the iPhone Teleprompter hood, to cater for different lengths of camera/lens. These mounting plates can also be raised upwards in case you need extra vertical height to centre you lens on the glass. And finally, we give you the ability to change the height of the iPhone Teleprompter hood, so that it fits perfectly on the camera lens. For the most flexible camera mounting systems and advanced Broadcast cameras/lenses, we would strongly recommend you look at our Master and Professional iPhone Teleprompters which are the most flexible iPhone Teleprompter mounting systems on the market. Due to the increased flexibility in the mounting system, all camera and lens types can remain flush against the tripod head whilst still remaining centred on the glass i.e if you are doing lots of pan and tilt work, the weight of the camera remains as close as possible to the tripod head, avoiding an pendulum effect and reducing control of your pan/ tilt.

If you are unsure whether your camera/lens/ tripod will be appropriate for your choice of iPhone Teleprompter, simply call our expert sales team today who will be happy to help.

Do you need to be able to read your iPhone Teleprompter outdoors/ in bright lighting conditions?

Our Starter iPhone Teleprompters are appropriate for most studio lighting and indoor conditions. If you need to use your iPhone Teleprompter outside in bright sunlight, you will require sufficient brightness in your iPhone Teleprompter monitor in order to be able to read it (we recommend greater than 1000 nits). In order to get this level of brightness, you will need to purchase one of our Master iPhone Teleprompters.

What software and scripting requirements do you have?

For most iPhone Teleprompter applications, there is a simple script that is prepared in advance, with a single presenter and the script simply needs to scroll from start to finish at a speed that is adjusted to keep pace with the presenter. Our Starter software provides this functionality and more e.g. dual-screen functionality to reverse the script for the iPhone Teleprompter monitor and simultaneously show it the right way up for the operator on the computer, the ability to import word documents, the ability to insert markers, and the ability to change the font/ size/ colour/ format of the script text. It will also run on PC and Mac (which isn’t offered by many other manufacturers) and is included free with any Starter iPhone Teleprompter – either from the full range or the Lite range (many other manufacturers will charge extra for the full software with their “Lite” range equivalent). If you require any more advanced functionality such as runorder management (for long scripts with different sections that you want to navigate to and edit quickly and easily), live edits (to make last minute script changes whilst in prompt mode), or newsroom interfaces (to integrate to an electronic newsroom system, such as Autocue’s, to get live updates from the newsroom system through to the iPhone Teleprompter), then you will need to consider our Master and Professional software and hardware ranges. Again, at Autocue, we are unique in being able to offer you the best solution, whatever the requirement or budget.

What control options do you need?

Will the speed of the script be controlled by a separate operator or the presenter themselves? We have the widest range of controller options, including wired and wireless, hand and foot controls to cover whatever you need.

Asking yourself these key questions, will give you a very good idea of what product you need, however, if you are still unsure at any stage, simply call one of our sales team. We have the widest range and knowledge of iPhone Teleprompters in the world, with over 100,000 users of our systems worldwide – give us a call and we’ll give you a product and price that is guaranteed to exceed your expectations and beat anything else in the market.

If you have multiple COM ports on your pc you may need to test each port. You must delete the scroll control and restart QPro each time you want to test a different COM port.

Q. How do I capitalise the whole script? (not available in QStart)

A. This can be accomplished by selecting all text (Ctrl A) and toggling the case by pressing the Toggle Case button in the menu bar (a=A). You can also use the quick key command Alt F3 for all caps and Alt F2 to return to sentence case. These commands and shortcuts can be found under the FORMAT menu found at the top of your QMaster program window.

Q. What's the best way to format my script on a teleprompter?

A. Be sure to separate phrases and sentences in a paragraph with returns. If you can separate the beginnings and endings with spaces, it will make it much easier to read. Also take care to put more spaces at the end of an item - this will prevent the presenter from continuing to read when the item has come to an end.

Q. What font type should I use on a teleprompter?

A. Using a sans-serif font is highly recommended. It cuts down the visual clutter and when combined with the all-caps presentation, the script is very easy to read and is very standard across the industry - including videotape, news and live-event productions. Sans-serif means 'without feet'. Examples include Arial, Tahoma, Veranda.

Q. What font size should I use on a teleprompter?

A. There is no standard font size in the industry. Be sure to check the actual output of the prompter monitor so you can estimate the required font size for the application. Remember that font sizes that are too big will cause scroll speed issues for you as well as contextual issues for talent. Also keep in mind that offering fewer options can keep your job from becoming unnecessarily complicated- more likely than not, if it's good enough for you it will be good enough for talent. If it isn't good enough, talent will tell you and you can then make necessary adjustments. Adjust font size by clicking the font button (TT) on the menu bar or use the quick key combination Ctl F.

Q. What colour font and background should I use on the teleprompter?

A. Standard color is white text on black background. If talent has trouble with white on black, try yellow on black (this is the highest contrast color combination for the human eye). You can do this very quickly by using the quick keys Alt A to select all text and Alt 4 to change the text to yellow.

Q. What should I use inverse colours for on the teleprompter?

A. Inverse colors are usually used to display production cues that should not be spoken. These cues would include: - Item Title - Talent Name - Next Camera - Mark SOT or Video Clip You can invert text by selecting the word and pressing the inverse toggle button on the menu bar (AA) or by using the quick key Ctrl E. If talent prefers to read black text on a white background, use the command PROMPT -> INVERT COLOURS.

Q. How can I best cope with long words on my teleprompter?

A. Most prompter operators reduce the size of the font for large words so that they fit on a single line. Alternatively, you can toggle the word into lower case or you can hyphenate. Note that a hyphen will show up on the second line and has limited use.

Q. What is the cue timer and when should I use it? (Not available in QStart)

A. A cue timer is useful for ad-libbed segments. An example is an interview or an award acceptance speech. This will count down a pre-determined time and will display a message at the end. You can invoke this cue timer by clicking the white clock on the menu bar and start the countdown by clicking the red clock on the menu bar.

Q. How do I make live edits on my teleprompter? (QMaster only)

A. QMaster allows editing text while in the middle of prompting. The first step is to unlink the edit pane from the prompt video output. This can be done by clicking the Prompt Tracking button on the menu bar. You can then open any story in the edit window independently from the position of the on-camera prompt output.

Q. Can I hide banners from being prompted? (Not available in QStart)

A. Yes. FILE -> PROPERTIES -> BANNER Tab -> Uncheck ENABLED

Q. How do I create queues and skeletons?

A. See our software tutorial on queues and skeletons: http://www.autocue-qtv.com/autocueppvid

Q. How do I change the default pane for editing scripts?

A. Please see our software tutorial on changing the default pane for editing scripts: http://www.autocue-qtv.com/autocueppvid

Q. How Do I scale the the QBox teleprompter output so that wrapping and margins stay the same, but the overall size is increased/decreased?

A. Scale the output of the QBox at this menu selection: TOOLS -> OPTIONS -> PROMPT ENGINES -> PROMPT SETTINGS
